Cut Flower Care

Updated: Jun 25, 2022

So you've just received a vase full of beautiful, fresh cut flowers, and now you're wondering "how do I keep these alive?!" The good news is, you don't need a green thumb to care for your flowers. The first step to healthy, long-lasting flowers is purchasing them from a local flower farm, which ensures you get the freshest blooms. Follow our other steps listed below to maximize your vase life and get the most out of your flowers.

  • Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight. Plants love the sun, but flowers in a vase do not!

  • Change your vase water every couple of days to make sure your flowers are drinking clean, fresh water.

  • If stems start to wilt, recut them at a 45 degree angle with sharp kitchen shears and place them back into cool, fresh water.

  • Feed them flower food! Made from a combination of citric acid, sugar, and bleach, flower food provides the nutrients your flowers need to stay fresh and colorful.

It's important to know that not all flowers do well in a vase, and will naturally fade a little sooner than other flowers. For bouquet subscriptions at Hideaway Flowers, we try to provide sturdy, long lasting flower varieties in our bouquets that will last in the vase for at least a week. Following the steps listed above will help ensure you still have flowers by the time your next bouquet arrives!

A few additional notes for our seasonal bouquet subscription customers:

  • You are more than welcome to keep the vase that comes with your flowers each week. However, if you find yourself wanting to return them, we will happily pick them up for you on the next delivery day.

  • Please keep an eye on your four-legged friends when leaving your flowers out around the house. As with many plants, there are some flowers that are not pet-friendly.

Have a sunshiney day!
